When Merck withdrew Vioxx in September 2004, many doctors began to wonder if the entire class of COX II drugs were dangerous.
In November 2004, a study was presented at the American Heart Association meeting that showed a clear link between Bextra use and heart attacks and strokes. This study included 5,930 patients from 12 trials and found 2. 19 times the number of heart attacks or strokes among Bextra patients, compared with those given placebos.
There were 45 heart attacks & strokes in the Bextra group compared with 7 in the placebo group. Pfizer immediately criticized the study and declared Bextra safe to the average patient.
On October 15, 2004, Pfizer stated publicly that heart problems with Bextra appear only in patients with a very high risk for heart disease who were having heart surgery.
In December 2004, Pfizer received bad news about its other popular COX II drug, Celebrex. A study conducted by the National Institute of Health showed that Celebrex, like Bextra and Vioxx, increased the incidence of heart attacks and strokes. After this study was released, the FDA asked Pfizer to stop marketing Bextra and Celebrex until further studies were conducted.
